Project Overview
Aquaview Engineering Kenya Limited was contracted to deliver a sustainable and climate-resilient water supply solution for St. Mary’s Ukwala High School in Siaya County. The school had been facing perennial water shortages, adversely affecting learning, sanitation, and general well-being of students and staff. The goal of this project was to provide a reliable source of clean and safe water through the development of a solar-powered borehole system.
Scope of Work
Hydrogeological Survey
A comprehensive hydrogeological survey was conducted to determine the optimal siting of the borehole, ensuring maximum yield and groundwater sustainability.
Borehole Drilling
A 110-meter-deep borehole was successfully drilled using high-capacity rotary drilling equipment. The borehole was drilled to the recommended depth based on geological conditions and the aquifer’s characteristics.
Well Construction
– The borehole was cased using high-quality PVC casings to ensure durability and prevent contamination.
– A gravel pack was installed to enhance filtration and prevent silt intrusion, maintaining water clarity and long-term performance.
Test Pumping and Yield Determination
Aquaview Engineering conducted a step-drawdown and constant rate test pumping exercise. The borehole recorded a sustainable yield of 5 cubic metres per hour, confirming its adequacy to meet the school’s daily water demand.
Water Quality Analysis
A full suite of bacteriological and physicochemical tests was conducted at a government-approved laboratory. The results complied with WHO and KEBS standards for potable water, confirming it is safe for human consumption.
Solar Pump Installation
To ensure cost-effective and eco-friendly operations, the borehole was equipped with a solar-powered submersible pump system. The system included:
-High-efficiency solar panels
– Submersible pump
– Control unit and safety accessories
– Piping and outlet fittings for water delivery
Impact
This project has transformed water access at St. Mary’s Ukwala High School, ensuring:
- Reliable, 24/7 supply of clean water for drinking, hygiene, and sanitation.
- Reduced dependency on external or seasonal water sources.
- Lower operational costs through renewable solar energy.
- Enhanced learning environment and improved student health.
